Gate City: A History of Omaha
Published in Hardcover by Pruett Publishing Co. (December, 1982)
Author: Lawrence H. and Cottrell, Barbara Larsen
Average review score:

Well written history of the City of Omaha
As a born-and-raised Omahan, I'm biased.. but this book is great. As some of the reviews mention, it does a great job of tying local events in Omaha's history into the national goings-on of the time.

This is a wonderful book about the incredible history of Omaha.

The Gathering Storm (Valley of the Peacemaker/W.E. Davis, Bk 1)

Authors: Wally Davis, Davis W. E., and We Davis

great easy reading
I was caught up in this story minutes after starting it.Full of action, written about the early gold mining days in California. The story centers around a young man,Matt, striking out on his own coming from the midwest and not knowing where life would lead him. Had some thrills, some mystery and a little romance.I hated to put the book down and was unhappy when it was over,I wanted more.It was neat to know that it had some real history in it. It was great, light, easy reading.

Geology of Death Valley National Park: Landforms, Crustal Extension, Geologic History
Published in Paperback by Kendall/Hunt Publishing Company (December, 2001)
Authors: Martin G. Miller and Lauren Wright
Average review score:

A Bridge in Time.
We recently re-visited Death Valley after a period of 30 years. This time, we had the help of the wonderful guide, "Geology of Death Valley" by Martin and Wright. The wonderful pictures really match the splendor of the Valley. The text offers a bit more insight into the world of geology than the usual "been there, done that" kind of guide book one usually finds on display for our national parks. The book forms a bridge between the world of every day living and the wonders of geologic time -- a guide to appreciating the stratigraphy of the valley.

German Cooking - The American Way!
In this crisply written, thoroughly accessible book designed for the home chef, author William D. Setzekorn has adapted a full repertoire of recipes handed down through the generations. Representatives of the cuisine brought to the United States by German immigrants in the mid-nineteenth century, this treasure trove of family favorites has been adapted to suit the contemporary American kitchen. All ingredients are readily available in any market and many convenience products have been integrated without compromising the authenticity of the dishes.

A full range of courses is offered here: appetizers like chicken liver pâté and stuffed mushrooms; potato, asparagus and chicken soups; a surprising array of seafood choices. There is an assortment of interesting preparations for game birds - pheasant in orange sauerkraut and duckling braised in red cabbage; roast goose with fruit stuffing.

For the heartiest appetites there are plenty of savory roast, schnitzels and stews, creamed vegetables and many variations on the ubiquitous cabbage. Still hungry for something sweet...try German pancakes or one of the strudel, kuchen or cookie recipes. This is an ethnic cookbook, but one so full of homey comfort foods of any American kitchen that the German-American Cookbook will be a popular addition to any home culinary library.

The Girls from the Five Great Valleys
Published in Textbook Binding by G K Hall & Co (January, 1977)
Author: Elizabeth Savage
Average review score:

Great book!
This takes place in the ranch country of Montana and is the wise , rueful, witty, and moving story of five teenage girls coming of age in 1934, in the cowtown-turned-colledg-town of Missoula.

This book faithfully recreates the bittersweet flavor of an adolescence shaped by small-town customs and the Big Sky Country. The book is a vibrant tragicomedy of manners that will affect readers of all ages and tastes.

Zimbabwe
This is an exceptionally well written tour guide book for Zimbabwe. I really enjoyed the photographs and the maps of the regions of Zimbabwe. The maps are very detailed depending on which area you plan to visit. It talks about the people, the climate, the language, and the way of life. I especially enjoyed the historical background of the country. It brings you up to date with what is happening now in the country. It tells the specifics for traveling by air, rail, and car. Each section is divided up by a specific part of the country. Listed are accomodations, tours and excursions, where to eat, health hazards and annual events and useful telephone numbers.I highly recommend this as a take along for your trip to Zimbabwe. Enjoy the book before you travel.
